What Is Fascia and How Can Manual Therapy Help With Pain?

Fascia: All collagenous fibrous connection tissues that can be seen as elements of a body-wide tensional force transmission network

You may have heard of myofascial release?

The word ‘myofacia’ connotes the bundled together, inseparable nature of muscle tissue (myo-) and its accompanying web of connective tissue (fascia) pg. 4

When you are receiving soft tissue work (Massage, myofascial release, pin and stretch, instrumented assisted soft tissue mobilization), you aren’t breaking up scar tissue! 99.9% of the time the tissue is receiving an input that is changing muscle tone, increasing blood flow to the area and changing the perception of pain to keep it simple.

Soft tissue work and manual treatment is an important part to how we treat patients but having an understanding of why we are doing it and knowing it isn’t a long term strategy to truly change how your tissue handles load and stressors is important to improve your function back to what your goals are.

If you aren’t receiving hands on treatment within your physical therapy treatment, you may be missing a big piece to your recovery and helping you reach your goals.

If you’re looking for an individualized approach providing one-on-one treatment each and every treatment session to enhance your recovery and help you reach your goals, set up a 15-minute discovery call to see if we are a good fit for you.
