Mobility training and physical therapy

Mobility training has become a hot topic over the past 5+ years but there’s confusion sometimes about what it is and who it is best for.

When we think of improving mobility, which is essentially just range of motion or how much a joint or region in the body can move within space, we need to consider passive and active components.

Flexibility is more specific to passive tissue mobility. How far a muscle or group of muscles can lengthen without any real muscle activity. Imagine your lying on your back and someone lifts your leg keeping it straight to see how far it will go back which assesses hamstring flexibility.

On the other hand, mobility is more about how far a muscle can lengthen and shorten actively (using muscles to create change) to create a desired change in a controlled state. This is what we like to focus on because you get the benefit of improving tissue mobility with control.

If you’re someone that is relatively stiff, you can’t touch your toes, your lower back and neck are always tight, mobility training most likely will be a good option for you. We incorporate mobility training into our Physical Therapy Treatment and Remote Programming option to help people reach their goals long-term to stay mobile, pain-free and functional long-term.
